Trump; my allegiance is with them and our country, not you.#8221; 9 Movies to Remind You How Bad US Health Care Used to Be - And Might Be Again (Photos) The Republicans are continuing their attempt at animalia (book), repealing the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, with the Senate voting to push a repeal bill to floor debate. The bill looks to roll back a number of the protections put in place by the ACA to protect Americans from issues like being denied coverage for reflective essay, pre-existing conditions or hitting lifetime limits on care. 1990's Grunge! But people hated American health care so much before 2010, Hollywood made plenty of movies, TV shows and self documentaries about it. Essay About! Here's a list of films that are a helpful reminder of how American health care used to be in the pre-2010 world. Everyone remembers Jack Nicholson’s obsessive-compulsive jerk of self, a writer, Melvin. What's easy to forget is he uses his substantial wealth to 1990's grunge, bail out a waitress (Helen Hunt) from her son’s high medical bills for his asthma. She notes how she gets screwed by reflective essay — guess who — her HMO when a doctor hired by Melvin shows up to black death Essay, give her son actual, competent medical care. Greed bad, kindness good.

That’s the moral of “Last Holiday,” in which Queen Latifah goes on an expensive vacation after learning she has a brain tumor that will kill her. Of course, her insurance won’t cover risky life-saving surgery. Latifah makes friends with almost everyone she meets at self reflective, the hotel and Essay and Current of Nissan they learn from her example. And then it turns out the tumor diagnosis was a mistake, so everyone wins. Taking on the Food and reflective essay Drug Administration rather than insurance companies, “Dallas Buyers Club” focuses on Essay about Grass-fed Beef how federal foot-dragging kept life-saving drugs out of the hands of AIDS patients in the 1980s. Matthew McConaughey fights for the right to take an unapproved drug and self essay wins, and learns to be less of a terrible person along the way. Essay Beef! Getting the flipside of the healthcare debate, “Critical Care” is all about the level of self essay, care you receive when you have good insurance. Focusing on 1990's grunge a man in a vegetative state, James Spader finds himself playing a doctor who wonders if it’s ethically cool to self reflective, just keep people alive (and maybe suffering) because it’s profitable. Everyone knows Walter White (Bryan Cranston) becomes Heisenberg, a meth-making Albuquerque kingpin, but they might not remember why: medical bills. Walt receives a cancer diagnosis that he fears will bankrupt his family, and 1990's grunge meth is a way for him to leave them enough money to survive before he goes. With issues like pre-existing conditions on their way back, it seems likely lots of people will be searching for extracurricular ways to pay their medical bills, and self reflective essay gofundme campaigns can only about Grass-fed vs. Grain-fed Beef go so far.

Documentarian Michael Moore picks apart the healthcare system and highlights the people it leaves behind. That includes 9/11 first responders in New York. The film digs into the history and issues of the U.S. employer-based insurance system -- a lot of self reflective, which will come back under the Republican bill -- and compares it to animalia (book), alternatives like those in Cuba, Canada and the United Kingdom. A John Grisham David v. Goliath legal story, “The Rainmaker” sees Matt Damon and Danny DeVito take an reflective extremely evil insurance company to court. The extremely evil insurer denies coverage to a couple whose son is dying of leukemia, but Damon and animalia (book) DeVito eventually wallop it in court. The reality of fighting insurance companies in court in the future will likely be less uplifting. The infamous Jigsaw killer targets the guy who denied him insurance coverage for an experimental cancer treatment. Jigsaw’s revenge: Make the guy who decides who lives and essay who dies for a living do it in 1990's grunge a much more hands-on, gory way. At the end of the movie, another family he decided not to self reflective essay, cover gets to choose whether to melt the on The, insurance guy with acid. Self Essay! Guess which option they pick. Denzel Washington plays a man whose son needs a heart transplant, but a technicality means his insurance won't cover it.

He takes an emergency room hostage, but, since everyone knows how evil insurance companies are, he manages to befriend everyone there. And then his son gets his operation, and John saves the healthcare system. As Trump-threatened repeal vote looms, here#8217;s a look back at how Hollywood covered the problems of the pre-Obamacare healthcare industry. The Republicans are continuing their attempt at repealing the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, with the Senate voting to push a repeal bill to floor debate. The bill looks to roll back a number of the protections put in place by the ACA to protect Americans from issues like being denied coverage for pre-existing conditions or hitting lifetime limits on care.

But people hated American health care so much before 2010, Hollywood made plenty of movies, TV shows and documentaries about it. Here's a list of animalia (book), films that are a helpful reminder of how American health care used to be in the pre-2010 world.

Writing a self reflective essay

Heroes: What They Do Why We Need Them. Human connections are a fickle and funny thing. Throughout our lifetimes we may pass by thousands of self essay, people without giving a second thought to who they are or where they’re going. Yet one simple interaction can completely alter the course of someone’s life. Black Essay? We only have to pay attention. Chen Si of Nanjing, China is an ordinary man of simple means. In 2003, he was barely able to make a living selling vegetables in a downtown market. It was then he began his daily walk down the essay Nanjing Yangtze River bridge, the most popular site for suicides on record. China has more deaths by Essay and Current Economics of Nissan suicide than any other country in the world, at over 280,000 a year — twice the rate of the United States.

The first day in 2003 he saved a man’s life after grabbing him from the railing and self essay tackling him to the ground. After that event, Si took it upon himself to serve as guardian angel to and Small Businesses Essay, those who wished to end their lives on reflective the bridge. He built a small house next to the entrance to vs. Grain-fed Beef, the bridge, where he has lived alone for self reflective essay the past 11 years. Each year Si saves an 1990's grunge, estimated 144 people. Throughout his service, he has seen people with problems of all kinds, but all are plagued by the same inescapable pain and hopelessness. According to Si, “I know they are tired of living here. They have had difficulties. Reflective? They have no one to help them.” But Chen Si’s heroism goes beyond the physical act of saving one’s life.

He provides salvation. He gives hope and direction where there is none. One story he remembers is of a woman whose abusive husband left her and her 3-month old child with nothing. Problems Businesses Essay? She had no education, no job, and no means of reflective, caring for the child. She hoped that her death would require her husband to take care of Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses Essay, her baby. After convincing her to self, leave the bridge with him, Si tracked him down and brought his wife and child with him. After the husband spit in his face, Si responded, “I am her brother now. If you ever hurt her again, I am not going to let you get away with it.” The couple left, and Chen hasn’t heard from vs. Grain-fed Beef, them again.

There have been countless others. The billionaire who lost everything. The student who couldn’t handle failure. The dreamer who bet it all and lost in reflective essay, the big city. Si has talked to all of them. 1990's Grunge? And while he cannot alter the circumstances that bring them to that point, he feels it is his responsibility to try and put them on a better path. Self Reflective Essay? “I always have to tell them there is Facing Entrepreneurs Essay nothing I can’t solve,” Chen said. “It’s a lie. Yet I have to keep on telling the lie, to make them think things will get better.” Chen Si teaches us that those at their lowest point in life, those who are so lost that they feel that they will never find their way again, are in the most need of our help. Many of the people on that bridge did not want Chen Si’s kind words and strong hands to pull them back from the edge — they pushed him away and yelled in his face, content to essay, accept their fate, and did not believe they were worthy of help and Film Techniques in What's compassion. It is easy to be a hero where there is a hole to fill, where people actively look for someone to protect and care for them and give their love in return. Reflective? Chen Si’s true heroism lies in 1990's grunge, his ability to look for those who do not advertise their struggle.

Those who have given up hope that a hero will ever appear. Many of us in self reflective essay, a similar situation would wonder how to address such a problem of Techniques Eating Gilbert Grape, this magnitude, how to save people who have no desire to be saved. To Chen Si, there is no choice or considerations to make. “There is a saying in China,” he says, “the prosperity of a nation is everyone’s responsibility. How can we all avoid this responsibility?” Kathryn Lynch is an undergraduate enrolled in Scott Allison’s Heroes and Villains First-Year Seminar at the University of Richmond.

She composed this essay as part of her course requirement. Kathryn and reflective her classmates are contributing authors to the forthcoming book, Heroes of 1990's grunge, Richmond, Virginia: Four Centuries of Courage, Dignity, and reflective Virtue. The Heroism of Daryl Davis, Collector of Robes. To those who took part in the social revolution of nearly half a century ago, the 21st century was expected to be a time of Utopian ideals. Instead, the world has entered a Dark Age of growing extremism, in which hate-mongering and race-baiting have replaced efforts to promote positive change. Instead of leaving the world a better place than they found it, the aging architects of that revolution have had to watch their accomplishments undermined and eroded. This has led to an atmosphere of despair.

Many wonder how we can come back from Essay on The Economics of Nissan, a culture war in which every day brings escalated rhetoric and the threat of increasing violence. The answer, of course, is the same as it has always been. The only way to self reflective, win a war of ideas is to win the hearts and minds of the people. And the only way to truly win hearts and minds is to Problems Facing Entrepreneurs, be right. For several decades now, a man named Daryl Davis has been doing just that, in a manner that is as unlikely as it is courageous. Davis, who holds a bachelor’s degree in music and who has performed with artists such as Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis (to say nothing of self essay, his own band), is a Black man who was a child during the Civil Rights Era. He experienced firsthand the harsh reality of that struggle when he became the first Black member of a local Cub Scout troop in Film Essay, Massachusetts. But his innate intellectual curiosity combined with his benevolent disposition to form a most unique reaction to essay, the problem of racism. It was in 1983 that Davis met a member of the 1990's grunge Ku Klux Klan for the first time, in a bar in Maryland where Davis was performing.

This proved to self essay, be an educational experience for both men. For the Klansman, because he had never known a Black man before and so was suddenly seeing one as a human being. Problems And Small Businesses? And for Davis because he finally found the answer to the question of how someone could hate him without knowing him — it was because they didn’t know him. The friendship that resulted from this encounter not only reflective essay, turned this Klansman away from the Klan, but showed Daryl Davis his path forward. Over the course of the years that followed, demonstrating patience and tolerance that can only be described as superhuman, Davis met many more Klansmen, by arranging introductions, setting up interviews, and even getting himself invited to Klan meetings. He believed that most racists hold their beliefs because of misconceptions instilled in them in their childhoods, and that it is difficult to maintain these prejudices when confronted with an actual person who belies them. In short, he believed that the about Grass-fed cure for ignorance is essay education, that the cure for animalia (book) suspicion is kindness, and self reflective essay that the cure for hatred is friendship. In this, he has been proven correct many times over. Davis is currently in possession of more than two dozen KKK robes, given to him by former Klansman who have abandoned their ideology, disarmed by the mere existence of this good-natured peacemaker.

Among those who have foresworn White supremacy in favor of a Black friend is Roger Kelly, former Imperial Wizard of the Maryland KKK. Kelly later invited Davis to be his daughter’s godfather. Unbelievably, or perhaps not given the Problems Businesses current political climate, Davis has been on the receiving end of criticism from some who self-identify as Progressives, including some members of Black Lives Matter and self essay the NAACP. He has been called an animalia (book), Uncle Tom, and worse, and his achievements have been minimized and reflective trivialized. After all, say his detractors, what difference does it make that in thirty years one man has softened only a smattering of hearts, has changed only animalia (book), a handful of minds? But what if everyone was like Daryl Davis? Rick Hutchins was born in Boston, MA, and has been an reflective essay, avid admirer of heroism since the black death groovy 60s. Reflective? In his quest to live up to the heroic ideal of helping people, he has worked in the health care field for the past twenty-five years, in various capacities. He is also the Facing Entrepreneurs and Small Essay author of Large In Time, a collection of poetry, The RH Factor, a collection of short stories, and is the creator of Trunkards. Links to galleries of self, his art, photography and animation can be found on

Hutchins is a regular contributor to about Grass-fed Beef, this blog. Two of his published essays, on astronaut and scientist Mae Jemison and the Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards, can be found in reflective essay, our book Heroic Leadership. General George Custer and Why Movies are Important. Movies aren’t history. That goes almost without saying. Very different skills are needed between recording something for posterity and Eating Essay bringing a rousing tale to the screen. And as such what is shown to an audience should always be taken with a grain of salt. Self Reflective? Facts can be altered for the cause of Facing Entrepreneurs and Small, entertainment. Events can change, sometimes beyond recognition, for the sake of the plot. However, movies should not be dismissed completely out of hand.

For while they are not an accurate recording of history they are in fact preserved moments in time. What film and television record are how people (the writers and self essay the audience they were made for) perceived the world around them. What made the hero? What made the villain? A good example of the intersection of fact and fiction is the life of Essay Grass-fed, General George Armstrong Custer.

The Custer of history, the man of flesh and blood, is best known for self reflective essay the worst day of his life: the Battle of Little Big Horn when the 7 th Cavalry met the animalia (book) united tribes of Lakota Sioux and Cheyenne. Custer and his regiment would not survive but odd, at times nearly unrecognizable, doppelgangers would be born from that moment of time. Doppelgangers that continue to exist to this day. The first of those fictional creations actually occurred within a few short years after the battle, though not yet on film. “Buffalo” Bill Cody incorporated the event in his wild west show, that for reflective a while even starred Custer’s lifetime nemesis, Chief Sitting Bull. The show portrayed what would become the familiar tale of 1990's grunge, Custer: the noble warrior valiantly fighting a hopeless battle against impossible odds. It wasn’t long before the story told before a live audience found its way to self, the burgeoning medium of film. Custer the hero would make his way into films like The Santa Fe Trail (1940), They Died With Their Boots On (1941) , 7 th Cavalry (1956) , and much later in TV series like Cheyenne (Season 4 episodes “Gold, Glory, and Custer”). The man standing on on The of Nissan the hill, surrounded by enemies and betrayed by allies, making his last stand. It would become the version of Custer that most people would become familiar with, whether they agreed with it or not. Yet oddly this wouldn’t be the only doppelganger to come to life in the realm of the screen.

The first embryonic version of a less noble Custer came in the form of Lieutenant Colonel Owen Thursday in the 1948 film Fort Apache. While not actually playing Custer, actor Henry Fonda portrays a character whose overconfidence and arrogance eventually leads his command into a massacre very much like that of self, Little Big Horn. But the full iteration of Film in What's Gilbert Essay, this new Custer would come in later films like Little Big Man (1970), The French/Italian farce Don’t Touch the White Woman! (1974), the alternately-historical The Court Martial of George Armstrong Custer (1977), and A Night at the Museum: Battle for the Smithsonian (2009). Custer was now a bumbling fool at best or a murderously insane madman at worst. The nadir of this version of Custer came in the 1990s TV series Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman where Custer was a brutal sadist who was a threat to friend and enemy alike. Custer the Hero still exists but now he has to share space with Custer the Villain and Custer the Buffoon. Yet these doppelgangers — the noble hero and the bumbling killer — actually say more about us, the writers and the audience, than the real man. In the time since Little Big Horn society has changed. Attitudes towards Native Americans, tastes in entertainment, and the tendency to deconstruct heroes rather than build them all conspire to change how we view historical figures.

It’s no longer popular to self reflective, portray a General of an aggressive, expanding power — as the United States was in the 1800s — as a heroic figure (and even that sentence alone could likely cause heated debate). And this is why movies and television are important when it comes to understanding heroes. They are our collective unconscious where our dreams and fears are given form. Our concepts of morality and Techniques in What's Eating Grape Essay nobility are played out. Self Reflective? Frozen moments, like insects trapped in amber, that tell us what the Film Techniques Grape Essay examples world was like when they were made. They tell us what was important to those making them whether we agree with them or not.

Modern sensibilities cannot alter them. Films and television may be suppressed, “re-imagined”, or edited but something of the tales will remain. We may not always like what we see in these shadows on screen but it is important that we see them for what they are and self essay learn from them. And maybe be aware of what we’re leaving behind, for today’s on-screen heroes can become tomorrow’s villains. The author, Jesse Schultz, is looking forward to seeing the fictionalized versions of his life. By Rick Hutchins and Economics of Nissan Scott T. Allison. If you love heroes and desire to self reflective, live in a more heroic society, there is no better time to Gilbert Grape Essay, be alive than right now. There is a clear and reflective growing “heroism movement” brewing around the world, manifesting itself in hero conferences, hero activism, and hero research.

Underlying each component of the heroism movement is the 1990's grunge idea that we can all be heroes, that heroism is not reserved for the few, the special, the elite among us, but rather is essay within close reach of and Small Businesses Essay, us all. Close reach, however, does not mean easy reach. This brings us to the concept of the “Almost Hero”. The Almost Hero is the person perched on self the precipice of heroism, the Film Eating Gilbert Essay individual who has heroic capability but doesn’t know it or who attempts to be heroic but just falls short. In this essay, we consider three types of Almost Heroes. First, there is the Almost hero who succumbs to the “bystander effect”, a phenomenon thrust into public consciousness after Kitty Genovese was murdered in reflective essay, 1964. For every instance of a heroic passerby coming to the aid of and Current, a person in self reflective essay, peril, there is a corresponding tale of those who stand idly by and witness a crime or assault without intervening. It’s the Essay about Grass-fed vs. Grain-fed Beef classic case of the road not taken. In one timeline, a person is saved and a hero is made, while in the other there is tragedy for one and a missed opportunity for the other.

What factors decide which outcome prevails? Science has an answer. Studies have shown that people fail to help because they “diffuse responsibility”, which is one’s tendency to assume that other people should do the hard work of self, heroism instead of oneself. heroism word on 1990's grunge keyboard butto. Of course, Almost Heroism of this type does not apply to those who do not have the option of self reflective, taking action; one cannot expect the elderly or the disabled to rush into a burning building or dive into a rushing river, nor even expect the black average person to engage an overwhelming or armed assailant. Here we are strictly concerned with those who could have acted but for one reason or another failed to do so. The bystander effect is a striking example of Almost Heroes choosing not to act when action is needed to save lives. But what about Almost Heroes who do act but whose actions fall short? What are we to make of them? This brings us to the second type of Almost Hero, the individual who rushes into a burning building to save someone but is overcome with smoke and must return to fresh air before successfully reaching the victim. Or the self essay Almost Hero who attempts CPR on an unbreathing heart attack victim but cannot revive the person.

Why should these failed attempts at Essay History Economics, heroism preclude them from achieving the status of hero? These attempts are usually referred to self, as “heroic efforts” or “heroic measures,” acknowledging the Facing Entrepreneurs and Small intent and the struggle to avert disaster, even if the self attempt falls short of success. In this case, the Almost Hero may be judged either generously or harshly by public opinion, depending on the particular circumstances surrounding the event, but the 1990's grunge most unforgiving critic of reflective essay, a failed heroic attempt is almost invariably the Almost Hero himself. But there is a third category of Almost Hero more tragic than either apathy or failure: What of those who sacrifice their own lives in their vain attempt to help another? Shortsighted people may condemn such people as foolhardy, but most of about Beef, us know better. Self Essay? There is no nobler act than dying in the act of Problems Facing Entrepreneurs and Small, serving others, regardless of the ultimate outcome. Yet because we live in essay, a society that worships at the altar of the final outcome, this third type of Almost Hero is the most overlooked hero. Essay Grass-fed Vs. Grain-fed Beef? Behavior speaks volumes.

If someone puts herself in harm’s way to help others, she is a hero regardless of the self essay outcome. We conclude with two caveats. First, we should note that Zeno Franco, a renowned heroism scientist, has discussed the idea of “heroic failure”, which does NOT refer to the idea of a failed heroic attempt but rather to the idea of a failure to even try. Franco writes, “By heroic failure what is meant is not that someone tried to be heroic and failed in Essay on The, the process, but rather that a leader’s heroic imagination failed, thus not allowing her to see the unfolding crisis events as requiring a heroic response.” It is incumbent upon all of self reflective essay, us to avoid heroic failure, to remain vigilant for opportunities to Essay about, help others. Second, we emphasize the benefits of helping others for self essay both the helper and History Economics of Nissan the recipient of helping. It really is a win-win situation.

Obviously, the recipient stands much to gain; his or her life may be saved. But what good does helping do the helper? Researchers have found that we benefit ourselves when we perform acts of kindness. Doing a good deed increases levels of oxytocin, a “cardioprotective” hormone that lowers blood pressure, decreases depression, and slows the aging process. Helping others has also been shown to increase optimism, moods, and relationship satisfaction. So there you have it. Do not settle for Almost Heroism. Settle for nothing less than Full Throttle Heroism that not only self reflective, benefits the helper and the helpee, but also benefits our entire society. Research has shown that kindness is contagious.

We are inspired by tales of Entrepreneurs, heroism, and your act of heroic kindness will produce a ripple effect that can forever alter the heroic mindset of generations to come. Franco, Z. Self Essay? E. (2017). Heroism in Times of Crisis: Understanding Leadership During Extreme Events. Death Essay? In S. T. Allison, G. R. Goethals, R. M. Kramer (Eds.), Handbook of heroism and heroic leadership . New York: Routledge. This essay represents the first collaboration between Rick Hutchins and Scott Allison. Rick has worked in self essay, the health care field for the past twenty-five years, in various capacities. He is also the author of Large In Time, a collection of poetry, The RH Factor, a collection of short stories, and is the Essay History and Current Economics creator of Trunkards. It has also been called the city of “contradictions” and “crises” (Campbell, 2012), a city with a “complicated history” replete with “struggles and wounds” (Ayers, 2012; Schwartz, 2012). Essay? Richmond, Virginia, has been a magnet for heroism and essay villainy, a place where the best and worst of human nature have collided over several centuries. This volume, Heroes of Richmond: Four Centuries of Courage, Dignity, and Virtue , represents an attempt to capture the complex heroic history of a complex city. Problems Essay? In our Mother’s Day blog, we noted our research finding that people listed their mothers as heroes more often than any other person. Fathers were a close second.

Why are parents viewed as so heroic? Developmental psychologists tell us that the on The History and Current Economics relationship we have with our parents is the first significant relationship of our lives. It is a relationship that indelibly shapes our values, our aspirations, and our future behavior. Thus when we experience successes in self essay, our careers and in our personal lives, it is not surprising that we attribute those triumphs, at least in part, to our parents. The origin of Techniques Eating Grape Essay, Father’s Day is not entirely clear, but there are several fascinating possibilities. Babylonian scholars have discovered a message carved in clay by self reflective essay a young man named Elmesu roughly 4,000 years ago. In the message, Elmesu wishes his father good health and a long life. Some believe this ancient message represents evidence of an established tradition of Essay, honoring fathers, but there is little evidence to self reflective, support a specially designated Father’s Day until modern times. There is some debate about the origin of the Essay Father’s Day that we celebrate today.

Some claim that a West Virginian named Grace Golden Clayton deserves the credit. In 1907, Clayton was grieving the loss of her own father when a tragic mine explosion in Monongah killed 361 men, 250 of whom were fathers. Clayton requested that her church establish a day to honor these lost fathers and to help the children of the affected families heal emotionally. Self Essay? The date she suggested was July 8 th , the anniversary of her own father’s death. Still others believe that the first Father’s Day was held on June 19, 1910 through the efforts of black Essay, Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Inspired by essay the newly recognized Mother’s Day, Dodd felt strongly that fatherhood needed recognition as well. Her own father, William Smart, was a Civil War veteran who was left to raise his family alone when his wife died giving birth to their sixth child. Dodd was the only daughter, and she helped her father raise her younger brothers, including her new infant brother Marshall. Whereas Mother’s Day was met with instant enthusiasm, Father’s Day was initially met with scorn and derision. Essay? Few people believed that fathers wanted, or needed, any acknowledgement.

It wasn’t until 1972 that President Richard Nixon made Father’s Day an self, official holiday. Today the holiday is widely celebrated in the month of June by more than 52 countries. Why are fathers heroes? The respondents in our survey listed two main reasons. First, fathers are given credit for being great teachers and mentors. They teach us how to Economics, fix a flat tire, shoot a basketball, and self essay write a resume.

Fathers are less emotional than mothers, but they lead by example and devote time demonstrating life skills to us. Former governor of New York, Mario Cuomo, once said, “I talk and about vs. Grain-fed talk and reflective talk, and I haven’t taught people in 50 years what my father taught by black death Essay example in one week.” Second, fathers are great providers and protectors. Self Reflective Essay? Our respondents told us that their fathers were heroes in their commitment to provide for their families, often at great sacrifice. Many fathers work at two or more jobs outside the animalia (book) home to ensure that their families have adequate food and shelter. Fathers also provide us with a sense of reflective essay, safety and Techniques Eating Grape protection. Sigmund Freud once wrote, “I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father’s protection.” On this Father’s Day, we wish all fathers, and all men who serve as father figures, all the kudos they so richly deserve. Happy Father’s Day! Do you have a hero that you would like us to profile?

How to Write a Self-Reflective Essay | The Pen and…

The Books: A Collection of Essays , ‘Charles Dickens’, by George Orwell. Orwell’s essay on Dickens is a monster. Essay. It could be a small book. Dickens is in What's Eating Gilbert Essay examples one of my favorite authors, and Orwell’s essay is essential reading, one of the best things ever written about Dickens. It includes observations such as this, which I think is just so right on: No one, at any rate no English writer, has written better about self essay, childhood than Dickens.

In spite of all the black Essay, knowledge that has accumulated since, in self spite of the fact that children are now comparatively sanely treated, no novelist has shown the same power of entering into the child’s point of view. I must have been about nine years old when I first read David Copperfield . The mental atmosphere of the opening chapters was so immediately intelligible to me that I vaguely imagined they had been written by a child . And yet when one re-reads the book as an adult and sees the Murdstones, for instance, dwindle from gigantic figures of doom into semi-comic monsters, these passages lose nothing. Dickens has been able to stand both inside and Film in What's Gilbert Grape Essay examples, outside the child’s mind, in such a way that the same scene can be wild burlesque or sinister reality, according to the age at which one reads it. That has been exactly my experience but I certainly couldn’t put it into essay, words like that. Because this is Orwell we are talking about it, his essay on Dickens also has a political component.

Dickens wrote a lot about the poor, obviously, and the plight of those with no power in 1990's grunge society: women, children, the destitute. Because of this, socialists (of which Orwell was one) tried to “claim” him as one of self reflective their own. Orwell’s response is: “Not so fast …” The essay opens with an anecdote about Lenin seeing a production of Dickens’ The Cricket on Businesses the Hearth and walking out in disgust, finding the “middle-class sentimentality” intolerable. Lenin actually understood Dickens better than the self, socialists in Orwell’s day who wanted to turn him into Facing Entrepreneurs and Small Essay, some kind of class revolutionary. Orwell looks at the issue from all sides. It is a fascinating critical and reflective essay, political/social analysis. For example: In Oliver Twist, Hard Times, Bleak House, Little Dorritt , Dickens attacked English institutions with a ferocity that has never since been approached.

Yet he managed to do it without making himself hated, and, more than this, the very people he attacked have swallowed him so completely that he has become a national institution himself. Orwell breaks down how that occurred. He observes that Dickens did not write about the famous “proletariat”. He did not write about agricultural laborers or factory workers, the heroes of Socialist thinking. He wrote about Film Techniques in What's Grape, bourgeois people: shopkeepers, bar owners, lawyers, innkeepers, servants: These are middle-class people, albeit with a grotesque edge. Dickens obviously had a social critique in his work, but unlike more proselytizing writers, he did not offer solutions, so much as present the problem. How is Oliver Twist saved? By one of those coincidental plot-points that operates so often in Dickens, where he is self reflective essay removed from the squalor of the streets into animalia (book), the glory of self essay a wealthy neighborhood.

This is written by a man who sees the issues but doesn’t really propose what we all should DO about Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses Essay, them (besides notice that there are issues and sometimes the mere act of noticing is the most important step). Additionally, if you look closely at Dickens, as Orwell points out, “there is no clear sign that he wants the existing order overthrown, or that he believes it would make much difference if it were overthrown.” So why were socialists trying to claim him then? If Dickens had a solution for the problems of the world, it would be something along the lines of: “Please be more kind and understanding towards one another.” This is self reflective not solely a political statement; it is more of a moral one, a Christian one. Dickens was a deeply moral writer. How David Copperfield is 1990's grunge treated is abominable. But the system itself is not really called into question, at least not in any way that proposes a solution.

Orwell criticizes Dickens for not proposing solutions, but he also sees him in a context that is revelatory. Orwell does not think a novelist has the reflective essay, same goal as a politician or social activist. It’s not Dickens’ job to say, “Here is what we should do about the poor.” But it is and Current interesting that the most popular writer in English history (save Shakespeare) would be so easily claim-able by so many diverse groups as a propagandist for their cause. You can imagine the fun Dickens might have had with these groups, were he alive to know how his work was being utilized. Dickens pointed out the ills in essay English society, in the same way that William Blake did. And yet he did so in a way that somehow maintained the status quo at the same time. And Small. William Blake was far more of a revolutionary than Dickens was. “The whole system STINKS” was basically Blake’s point in reflective essay his devastating poems about child chimney sweeps. Grass-fed Beef. Dickens has other concerns. Orwell is fascinating on A Tale of Two Cities , but again, he points out that the scenes of the Terror in France only take up a couple of chapters. The rest of the book involves clattering London streets, nice little apartments, shops and inns, and carriages. The Defarge couple hang over that book like a guillotine, reminding us of the horrors of revolution (Madame Defarge is self essay one of Dickens’ most brilliant creations).

By the on The History of Nissan, time Dickens was writing, the romantic idea that the self reflective essay, French revolution was about “liberte, egalite, and etc.” was long over. The guillotine got rid of that. Napoleon got rid of that. Facing. Dickens’ description of the mob violence in the French Revolution is still frightening to read today, because you can see what madness it is. Interestingly enough: the self essay, social and political critique that led to the French Revolution were predictive of 20th century causes that would erupt Russia, China, Africa, etc., into violent revolutions, some which burned out quickly (granted, leaving millions dead in some cases), others which morphed into something even more monstrous and long-lasting. But behind those revolutions was the Problems Facing Businesses, idea that “the way life is set up right now is unfair: why do so few people hold so much wealth?

Let’s spread it around a little bit.” This was in operation with the French Revolution, too. Cathedrals and mansions were commandeered by the people. Wealth was supposed to change hands, collectively, from the wealthy to essay the peasant class. It was only fair. Facing Entrepreneurs Essay. It was also a horrible horrible idea. Society’s ills run deeper than money.

Because wealth provides opportunities, the wealthy were often the people who knew how to do shit , and without their expertise, the self essay, peasants floundered. We saw this in Russia, in China. Once you cut off the past so violently, once you say to an entire class of people: “You are no longer welcome”, you cut off possibility. This was Edmund Burke’s famous critique of the French Revolution. Problems Essay. It horrified him. Yes, there was unfairness in the distribution of wealth, but the solution was not to tear down the self reflective essay, institutions themselves. That would be a disastrous decision.

Burke was right, as we saw in France, in Russia, in black death Essay China, in Iran, and on and on. Dickens understood that element of the French Revolution, and also understood the fearsome underbelly of revolutions which produce terrifying personages such as Robespierre. Once the purges begin, they are nearly impossible to stop: at one point does a whole culture say, “Okay. Self Reflective. We can stop purging now”? Once you cut off the heads of your own monarchs in a public square, all bets are off. Everyone is Film in What's Eating Gilbert going to go down eventually. Dickens’ book, especially with the inclusion of Madame Defarge, really gets that. So to the socialists who think Dickens is one of self essay them, Orwell says, “Come again? Have you read Tale of Two Cities ? You think he approves of revolution?

What author have YOU been reading?” Dickens is pretty contemptuous, overall, about the English education system. Black. Schools suck, in essay Dickens’ world, which was probably an Problems Facing Essay, accurate reflection of what was going on (and something Orwell would clearly relate to, as we saw in his essay about his experience in an English boarding school). Again, though, Dickens proposes no solution. Reflective Essay. He was not formally educated himself. Schoolmasters and teachers were ridiculous figures to him, pompous, cruel, unfair, and worthy of parody. It’s hard to find a good example of a teacher in Dickens’ work, which speaks volumes. Orwell speaks of Dickens’ refreshing lack of nationalism, another reason why socialists wanted to claim him.

Orwell makes the black Essay, accurate observation that Dickens does not “exploit” the “other” in his works. His books clamor with people from all different walks of life, Irishmen, Scotsmen, Englishmen … and all emerge as human, albeit often ridiculous. But we’re all ridiculous, to some degree. Self Reflective. He is not in service to Economics the King, or to England. He is a humanist.

He does not wave a flag. Essay. This may not be as easily seen today, or it may not be seen as very important, because questions of nationalism are not as paramount as they were in the 30s and 40s, when nations were behaving like a bunch of lunatics. Black Death. I’m not saying we’re out self essay of the Film in What's Eating Grape, woods yet. But the time in self which Orwell was writing, as well as his socialist Marxist background, informs his analysis in Film Techniques Eating Gilbert Grape Essay a way that is quite interesting. Orwell finds Dickens’ lack of patriotism refreshing. (It’s also probably one of the reasons why Dickens’ books have traveled so far and lasted so long: they are not rooted in self essay a time and place, they do not read as propaganda for a cause, as so much of the literature done by Dickens’ contemporaries does.

Dickens’ books are about people , not politics.) I absolutely love this section: The fact that Dickens is always thought of Film Techniques Eating Grape examples as a caricaturist, although he was constantly trying to be something else, is perhaps the surest mark of his genius. Essay. The monstrosities that he created are still remembered as monstrosities, in Essay on The of Nissan spite of getting mixed up in self reflective would-be probable melodramas. Their first impact is so vivid that nothing that comes afterwards effaces it. As with the people one knew in childhood, one seems always to remember them in Essay one particular attitude, doing one particular thing. Mrs. Squeers is always ladling out brimstone and treacle, Mrs. Gummidge is always weeping, Mrs. Gargery is reflective always banging her husband’s head against 1990's grunge the wall, Mrs. Jellyby is always scribbling tracta while her children fall into the area — and there they all are, fixed for ever like little twinkling miniatures painted on snuffbox lids, completely fantastic and incredible, and yet somehow more solid and infinitely more memorable than the efforts of serious novelists.

Even by the standards of his time Dickens was an exceptionally artificial writer. As Ruskin said, he “chose to work in a circle of stage fire”. His characters are even more distorted and simplified than Smolett’s. But there are no rules in self novel-writing, and for any work of art there is Essay History Economics of Nissan only one test worth bothering about — survival. By this test Dickens’s characters have succeeded, even if the people who remember them hardly think of self reflective essay them as human beings. They are monsters, but at any rate they exist . While the political critique is fascinating, Orwell also analyzes Dickens on a purely literary level, and it is such a joy to read. History And Current. (He is always a joy to read.) As I said, the self reflective, essay is a multi-piece monster, and should be read in its entirety, but here is a wonderful excerpt.

What is more striking, in a seemingly ‘progressive’ radical, is that he is not mechanically minded. He shows no interest either in 1990's grunge the details of machinery or in the things machinery can do. As Gissing remarks, Dickens nowhere describes a railway journey with anything like the enthusiasm he shows in describing journeys by stage-coach. In nearly all of his books one has a curious feeling that one is living in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, and in fact, he does tend to return to this period. Little Dorrit , written in the middle fifties, deals with the reflective, late twenties; Great Expectations (1861) is not dated, but evidently deals with the twenties and Problems Entrepreneurs Essay, thirties. Several of the self essay, inventions and 1990's grunge, discoveries which have made the modern world possible (the electric telegraph, the breech-loading gun, India-rubber, coal gas, wood-pulp paper) first appeared in Dickens’s lifetime, but he scarcely notes them in his books. Nothing is queerer than the vagueness with which he speaks of Doyce’s ‘invention’ in Little Dorrit . It is represented as something extremely ingenious and revolutionary, ‘of great importance to essay his country and his fellow-creatures’, and it is death also an important minor link in the book; yet we are never told what the self reflective, ‘invention’ is!

On the other hand, Doyce’s physical appearance is 1990's grunge hit off with the typical Dickens touch; he has a peculiar way of moving his thumb, a way characteristic of engineers. After that, Doyce is firmly anchored in one’s memory; but, as usual, Dickens has done it by fastening on something external. There are people (Tennyson is an example) who lack the mechanical faculty but can see the social possibilities of machinery. Self Reflective Essay. Dickens has not this stamp of mind. He shows very little consciousness of the future. When he speaks of Essay human progress it is usually in terms of moral progress — men growing better; probably he would never admit that men are only as good as their technical development allows them to be.

At this point the gap between Dickens and self reflective essay, his modern analogue, H.G. Film Techniques Grape Essay Examples. Wells, is at its widest. Wells wears the self, future round his neck like a mill-stone, but Dickens’s unscientific cast of mind is just as damaging in a different way. Film In What's Eating Gilbert Examples. What it does is to make any positive attitude more difficult for self reflective essay, him. He is hostile to the feudal, agricultural past and not in real touch with the industrial present.

Well, then, all that remains is the future (meaning Science, ‘progress’, and so forth), which hardly enters into his thoughts. Therefore, while attacking everything in sight, he has no definable standard of comparison. As I have pointed out already, he attacks the animalia (book), current educational system with perfect justice, and yet, after all, he has no remedy to self reflective essay offer except kindlier schoolmasters. Why did he not indicate what a school might have been? Why did he not have his own sons educated according to some plan of 1990's grunge his own, instead of sending them to public schools to be stuffed with Greek? Because he lacked that kind of self reflective imagination. He has an infallible moral sense, but very little intellectual curiosity. And here one comes upon something which really is an enormous deficiency in Dickens, something, that really does make the nineteenth century seem remote from us — that he has no idea of work . With the and Small Essay, doubtful exception of David Copperfield (merely Dickens himself), one cannot point to a single one of his central characters who is primarily interested in self essay his job.

His heroes work in about Beef order to make a living and to marry the essay, heroine, not because they feel a passionate interest in one particular subject. Martin Chuzzlewit, for instance, is not burning with zeal to Essay be an architect; he might just as well be a doctor or a barrister. Reflective Essay. In any case, in the typical Dickens novel, the Deus Ex Machina enters with a bag of gold in the last chapter and the hero is Problems Facing Entrepreneurs absolved from further struggle. Essay. The feeling ‘This is what I came into the world to do. Everything else is uninteresting. I will do this even if it means starvation’, which turns men of differing temperaments into scientists, inventors, artists, priests, explorers and revolutionaries — this motif is almost entirely absent from black death Essay, Dickens’s books.

He himself, as is well known, worked like a slave and essay, believed in Essay History Economics of Nissan his work as few novelists have ever done. But there seems to be no calling except novel-writing (and perhaps acting) towards which he can imagine this kind of devotion. And, after all, it is natural enough, considering his rather negative attitude towards society. In the last resort there is nothing he admires except common decency. Science is uninteresting and machinery is cruel and ugly (the heads of the elephants). Business is only for ruffians like Bounderby. As for politics — leave that to the Tite Barnacles. Really there is no objective except to marry the heroine, settle down, live solvently and be kind. And you can do that much better in private life.

Here, perhaps, one gets a glimpse of Dickens’s secret imaginative background. What did he think of as the most desirable way to live? When Martin Chuzzlewit had made it up with his uncle, when Nicholas Nickleby had married money, when John Harman had been enriched by Boffin what did they do ? The answer evidently is that they did nothing. Self Essay. Nicholas Nickleby invested his wife’s money with the Cheerybles and ‘became a rich and prosperous merchant’, but as he immediately retired into Devonshire, we can assume that he did not work very hard. Death. Mr. and Mrs. Snodgrass ‘purchased and cultivated a small farm, more for essay, occupation than profit.’ That is the spirit in which most of Dickens’s books end — a sort of radiant idleness. Where he appears to disapprove of young men who do not work (Harthouse, Harry Gowan, Richard Carstone, Wrayburn before his reformation) it is because they are cynical and immoral or because they are a burden on somebody else; if you are ‘good’, and also self-supporting, there is no reason why you should not spend fifty years in simply drawing your dividends. Home life is 1990's grunge always enough. And, after all, it was the general assumption of his age. The ‘genteel sufficiency’, the ‘competence’, the ‘gentleman of independent means’ (or ‘in easy circumstances’)— the very phrases tell one all about the strange, empty dream of the eighteenth-and nineteenth-century middle bourgeoisie.

It was a dream of complete idleness . Charles Reade conveys its spirit perfectly in the ending of Hard Cash . Alfred Hardie, hero of Hard Cash , is the typical nineteenth-century novel-hero (public-school style), with gifts which Reade describes as amounting to ‘genius’. He is an old Etonian and a scholar of Oxford, he knows most of the Greek and Latin classics by heart, he can box with prizefighters and self, win the Diamond Sculls at Henley. He goes through incredible adventures in which, of course, he behaves with faultless heroism, and then, at the age of twenty-five, he inherits a fortune, marries his Julia Dodd and settles down in the suburbs of Liverpool, in Facing and Small the same house as his parents-in-law: They all lived together at Albion Villa, thanks to Alfred . . . Oh, you happy little villa! You were as like Paradise as any mortal dwelling can be. A day came, however, when your walls could no longer hold all the happy inmates. Julia presented Alfred with a lovely boy; enter two nurses and self essay, the villa showed symptoms of 1990's grunge bursting. Two months more, and Alfred and his wife overflowed into the next villa. It was but twenty yards off; and there was a double reason for self essay, the migration. As often happens after a long separation, Heaven bestowed on Captain and Film Techniques in What's Grape Essay examples, Mrs.

Dodd another infant to play about their knees, etc. Self. etc. etc. This is the type of the Victorian happy ending — a vision of a huge, loving family of three or four generations, all crammed together in the same house and Essay and Current, constantly multiplying, like a bed of oysters. Self Reflective. What is striking about it is the utterly soft, sheltered, effortless life that it implies. It is not even a violent idleness, like Squire Western’s. That is the significance of Dickens’s urban background and Techniques, his noninterest in the blackguardly-sporting military side of life.

His heroes, once they had come into money and ‘settled down’, would not only do no work; they would not even ride, hunt, shoot, fight duels, elope with actresses or lose money at the races. Self Reflective. They would simply live at Essay about Grass-fed vs. Grain-fed home in self essay feather-bed respectability, and preferably next door to a blood-relation living exactly the same life: The first act of Nicholas, when he became a rich and prosperous merchant, was to buy his father’s old house. As time crept on, and there came gradually about him a group of Essay and Current lovely children, it was altered and enlarged; but none of the old rooms were ever pulled down, no old tree was ever rooted up, nothing with which there was any association of bygone times was ever removed or changed. Within a stone’s-throw was another retreat enlivened by children’s pleasant voices too; and here was Kate . . . the reflective, same true, gentle creature, the Entrepreneurs Essay, same fond sister, the same in the love of all about her, as in her girlish days. It is the same incestuous atmosphere as in the passage quoted from essay, Reade.

And evidently this is Problems Facing Businesses Essay Dickens’s ideal ending. It is essay perfectly attained in Nicholas Nickleby, Martin Chuzzlewit and Pickwick , and Essay about, it is approximated to in varying degrees in almost all the others. Essay. The exceptions are Hard Times and Great Expectations — the latter actually has a ‘happy ending’, but it contradicts the general tendency of the book, and Problems Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses Essay, it was put in at the request of Bulwer Lytton. The ideal to be striven after, then, appears to be something like this: a hundred thousand pounds, a quaint old house with plenty of ivy on it, a sweetly womanly wife, a horde of children, and no work. Self Essay. Everything is death safe, soft, peaceful and, above all, domestic. In the moss-grown churchyard down the road are the graves of the self essay, loved ones who passed away before the happy ending happened. The servants are comic and feudal, the children prattle round your feet, the old friends sit at your fireside, talking of Essay about vs. Grain-fed past days, there is the reflective, endless succession of enormous meals, the cold punch and sherry negus, the feather beds and warming-pans, the Christmas parties with charades and Essay on The History and Current Economics of Nissan, blind man’s buff; but nothing ever happens, except the yearly childbirth. The curious thing is that it is a genuinely happy picture, or so Dickens is able to essay make it appear. The thought of that kind of existence is Problems Facing Entrepreneurs satisfying to him. This alone would be enough to tell one that more than a hundred years have passed since Dickens’s first book was written. No modern man could combine such purposelessness with so much vitality.

How to Write a Self-Reflective Essay | The Pen and…

Eating yourself: We consume identity through food? It was one of the pioneers of French gastronomy writing, Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, who penned the now famous observation: ‘Tell me what kind of self, food you eat, and Film Techniques in What's Essay examples I will tell you what kind of essay, man you are.’ This was a more opinionated version than that which is found in Film Techniques Eating Grape Essay, the Bible, to paraphrase Corinthians ‘your body is a temple’. On the self reflective other side of the world Buddha was providing similar advice: ‘ keep the body in good health ’. This insight presents as a human truism; it is Essay Grass-fed, reasonable to surmise that from the reflective beginning of time, primordial man would have been able to link good food with health (I know this does not reconcile evolution with the current obesity epidemic). Importantly, there is a difference between recognising that what you eat is what you are and that what you eat constructs who you are. Animalia (book)! We symbolically consume identity through our food and drink choices – more specifically, by what we don’t eat or drink. Eating is an intensely personal act. What we eat communicates to others our beliefs, cultural and social backgrounds and experiences.

In the western world, testament to how we think about who we are, increasingly we join fashionable dietary tribes, where we temporarily graze within before moving onto greener fields. Who hasn’t tried on for size at some time being a: vegetarian, paleo, vegan, piscatarian, halal, Atkins, etc.; or my favourites, those that just hold their knife and fork high and find momentary solace in being a flexitarian? All of these dietary choices have something in common; they are all opposed to being an omnivore. As apes, even very civilized ones, we are omnivores. In its broadest term, an omnivore will eat anything. Uniquely perhaps amongst animals, while we can digest the two main food groups (animals and/or plants), we have choice. All of the dietary-tribes above are defined by their rejection of some aspect of reflective, ‘everything’. There are many reasons why we exclude foods from our diet, from basic health needs to deep cultural and religious beliefs.

What is interesting is the on The role that food plays in constructing our identities. Self Reflective! This is across psychological, anthropological thinking, and also semiotically, in Essay and Current Economics, how the meaning is expressed. Something that all humans share is also something that we use to differentiate ourselves on a daily basis. ‘Food is our common ground, a universal experience’. Different ways of cooking the topic. It’s easy to self think when reviewing literature on eating that there are too many chefs in the kitchen.

Many disciplines have their leading thinkers in the subject area and there is a tantalising array of papers to Problems Facing Entrepreneurs look at. With this in mind, I’m going to stick to self reflective some of the papers that are more topical to what I’m currently looking at. Even a quick and cursory exploration is useful to contextualise how food relates to identity. Food is a highly condensed social fact. It is elementary that food is more than something alimentary. Semioticians have likened the use of food in vs. Grain-fed, society and culture to language. Reflective! As Roland Barthes, suggests. ‘When he (modern consumer) buys an item of food, consumes it, or services it, modern man does not manipulate a simple object in a purely transitive fashion; this item of foods sums up and black death Essay transmits a situation; it constitutes an information; it signifies’. This structuralist perspective was developed further by Claude Levi-Stauss, who identified that food can be conceived as a language that expresses social structures and cultural systems. He posits that food “must not only be good to eat, but also good to self reflective think (with)”. I have discussed some of his influential approaches in the preceding post.

As early as 1899, Thorstein Veblen in his work ‘ Conspicuous Consumption’ noted that food connotes class and privilege. Subsequent studies have painted this picture in deeper relief. The sociologist Norbert Elias identified the symbolic meaning of foods performing a significant role in Essay vs. Grain-fed, determining social power and status relationships. Likewise, Pierre Bourdieu has suggested that social stratification and class are defined by taste. In an influential series of works Mary Douglas has looked at food as eating codes that define an individual’s place within a society and serve to actively maintain social order. We find that the structure of reflective essay, society closely correlates to the nature of status foods:

Ethnographic research has revealed that an about Grass-fed Beef emphasis on quantity of food and elaboration of common staples is found mostly in societies without strong social stratification, while an emphasis on quality and style is reflective essay, characteristic of societies with institutionalized forms of social ranking. In the former context the consumption of black Essay, luxury foods is used primarily to create or enhance social bonds, in the latter to create or enhance exclusivity and distance. Jack Goody provides further insight about the social organisation of food. He has been able to illustrate that societies where there is little lifestyle difference between members, special occasions are characterised by the quantity of self, food. In comparison, in hierarchical societies where you tend to black death Essay find sub-cultures, it is typical to find quality and foreignness in food as the differentiators of status. A characteristic of societies with social equality is that there tends to be a more equitable distribution of food. It was the improved availability of food that was the main driver of the evolution of haute cuisine and fine dining, as the upper-echelons of society moved to further differentiate themselves from the masses. High status foods are characterised by rarity, cost, labour time, prominence of animal proteins and non-nutritional meanings and associations.

At the same time there was shift towards individuality and the separation of classes, which resulted in eating innovations such as tables and cutlery. This presents another paradox in how different cultures perceive eaters. Body image, in relation to food, is a way of reflective essay, creating more social meaning. Where there was a shift away from status-meals defined by quantity, in Techniques in What's Grape, cultures where there is an abundance of food thinness is associated with privilege and status. Whereas, we find that in societies where food is scarce, there is the perception that being overweight is a status marker. ‘Food can be used to self reflective mark and create relations of equality, intimacy or solidarity or, instead, to uphold relations signalling rank, distance or segmentation. This can be illustrated by looking at the use of food to communicate different types of class through consumption’.

The differences in class were brilliantly highlighted and exploited in this Australian Meat Pie advertisement. Another example of this was in the broadcast on black Essay NPR’s ‘Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell me’. Self Reflective! Where the Facing and Small Businesses hosts of the reflective show comment on a shared insight to NPR’s audience: PETER SAGAL “But first, great news: according to a new study, listeners to NPR News are better informed than people who get their news anywhere else. This is true. They asked everyone a series of questions about things, and NPR listeners got more of the questions right than say cable TV news watchers.

Of course, the animalia (book) questions were a little slanted”. KASELL: “To the best of your knowledge, which wine pairs best with a Prius?” Adrienne Lehrer discussed how this symbolism is co-opted by essay, politicians to bolster their ‘working man’ appeal. Film In What's Eating! This has left the American voters with a quadrennial entertainment watching potential leaders of the free world struggle with some of the messiest foods that are even called ‘sliders’. Politicians do this public ritual to literally digest some blue-collar credibility. Pierre Bourdieu makes the observation that ‘Taste classifies, and self reflective essay it classifies the classifier’. About Grass-fed Beef! He points to the denial of ‘lower’ forms affirms those that have ‘taste’: ‘That is why art and self essay cultural consumption are predisposed, consciously and deliberately or not, to fulfil a social function of legitimating social differences’.

Politicians can step into the majority’s lives by sharing this daily bread and breaking these codes by stepping off the culinary podium. This concept of food being a social marker of class is not limited to the western cultures; it is also present in eastern cultures. Food: “… was elevated at Problems Facing and Small Businesses Essay an early period [in China] from necessity to art, from self reflective essay, sustenance to elegance; the subsequent high cultural status assured that food would remain a key ingredient in the language and structure of literature and 1990's grunge art”. It is worth noting that food across many cultures is a form of aesthetic satisfaction. Speaking to self essay all of our senses, food words have become powerful metaphors in how we think about the Techniques Gilbert examples world.

Think of a half-baked idea; you cram in knowledge for an exam; you are digesting this blog, etc. Ethnic and Cultural Symbolism of Food. Sidney Mintz has shown how these symbolic meanings change with different cultural, ethnic and class considerations. Food, geography or place and identity are intertwined from a symbolic perspective. Wenying Xu makes the important perspective that food is one of the ways that we engage with, and understand, other cultures: ‘’Food operates as one of the essay key cultural signs that structure people’s identities and their concepts of others’ . Bell and Valentine go into this definition in more detail, stating that national identity is Techniques Eating Essay, linked to food: “The history of any nation’s diet is the history of the nation itself, with food fashion, fads and fancies mapping episodes of self, colonialism and migration, trade and Essay on The History and Current Economics of Nissan exploration, cultural exchange and boundary making” Ethnographically we find that ethnic identities are expressed and reflective essay maintained through dietary choices. The food that we eat can strengthen ties to your ethnicity on a day-to-day basis and it can also reflexively reinforce a sense of identity when you are in another culture. English seeking fish and chips in Greece, Australians hunting for Vegemite on Toast in Asia, and Americans looking for burgers everywhere, are examples of this identity reinforcement on holidays. While I’m focusing on food here, coffee, tea and alcohol are also used in Essay on The and Current of Nissan, similar ways.

While not a focus here, it should be noted that in the fluid global world of self, exchanged culinary traditions, foods are constantly reimagined and reinvented to suit the local culture. Often these can be cultural definitions; consider the similarities and difference between the death croque – monsieur to a toasted sandwich; a meat pie to a beef wellington; or Japanese tempura to Portuguese battered fish. You don’t have to be the originator of a concept just to have a unique version that bonds a group of people. Consider the reflective essay Cronut as a recent invention that speaks to NYC but blends donuts and croissants from different cultures, unified in a glaze of black death Essay, American sugar. “The destiny of nations depends on the manner in reflective, which they feed themselves.” Food can also speak to a political identity on a cultural level. Negatively, we stereotype nations with slurs evoking their foods; the French are frogs, Germans are Krauts, Mexicans are Beaners, etc. However, we also hold in high reverence the influence of cuisines from around the world and what they contribute to the global table.

The presence of McDonalds in animalia (book), Moscow is symbolic on a broader scale, representative of the ‘triumph of capitalism over communism’ Noting that America’s recent thaw in reflective essay, relations with Vietnam has led to ‘A McDonald’s doorman gesture during the opening ceremony of the country’s first McDonald’s restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City on February 8, 2014’. How has individual consumption changed? “Identity can be defined as the individual’s identification and belongingness to particular social groups on the basis of differences socially sanctioned as significant” In a more global world, cultural and ethnic boundaries are increasingly becoming more permeable. Food in particular is available in more ethnic diversity. Here, Anthony Giddens has suggested that food should move from black death Essay, a consumption model at a social group to one that reflects the individual consumption: A paradox seems to reflective emerge from this debate: it appears to conclude that diets become more different at the same time that they become more similar.

One way of reading this paradox is the animalia (book) shift from reflective essay, ‘model’ to ‘style’. While ‘consumption model’ is Essay on The of Nissan, a concept that refers to a social group (a community, a nation), style refers to the individual behaviour. The individual, in his/her food consumption behaviour, loses any reference to any objective belonging, to a family, a social group, a class, a community. He/she is driven only by his/her subjective choice, of an ideological, hedonistic nature. Style choices are negotiated among a diversity of options, in a plurality of contexts and authorities (Giddens 1991: 5) This speaks to the societal shift from social classes that are defined by birth or later the type of job you have, to a post-industrial society where individuals are defined by ideology or by what they consume. This thinking is self reflective essay, related to what Ulrich Beck defines as the 1990's grunge individualisation process of self essay, reflexive modernity. The reflexivity of modern social life consists in Essay on The Economics, the fact that social practices are constantly examined and reformed in the light of self reflective, incoming information about those very practices, thus constitutively altering their character . . . only in the era of modernity is the revision of animalia (book), convention radicalised to apply (in principle) to all aspects of human life. . . . (Giddens) Beck believes that self-identity is determined more by lifestyle where people are presented a diversity of choices in all areas of their lives.

Beck’s conception is that the self is not a passive identity that is determined by self essay, external influences. The self is a reflexive project sustained through the routine development and sustainment of 1990's grunge, a coherent narrative of self-identity: our biographies (Giddens). Scott Lash identifies that in this context ‘individuals must innovate rules in a bricolage of self reflective essay, their own identities’. However, while we are more likely to identify ourselves as being individuals, as creative as we get, it is our social interaction that regulates this sense of identity. Animalia (book)! Identity without context is meaningless. The current foodie culture and diversity of foods in western cultures has made food a much more democratic facet of self essay, modern societies. As a style, it is something that consumers are increasingly food-literate and empowered to comment on. Techniques Eating Grape Essay! As the food critic, Frank Bruni observes. “Food is an aspect of culture that, because everyone necessarily participates in it to some degree, is more egalitarian than, say, ballet, or opera, or even theatre. It’s easier and less intimidating to join the fray and weigh in with an opinion”

Contributing to this are the swathe of self reflective essay, entry points into the world of food for Essay on The and Current Economics of Nissan, the modern consumer: celebrity and contestant cooking shows, foodie magazines, websites and food festivals. Self! Here everyone is invited to voyeuristically or personally participate in black death, a range of foods that we might never eat. Essay! Like sports, you don’t have to Essay Grass-fed vs. Grain-fed Beef play to be a member of the self reflective club. Food choices are central to the evolution of humans from apes. Death! One of the most useful perspectives here was proposed by self reflective essay, Claude Fischler, who introduced the Essay concept of the ‘ incorporation principle’ . He starts by defining that humans are biologically omnivores. Being an omnivore is a paradox, in that we need novelty and are driven to explore new foods, but are also fearful and essay reluctant to try new foods because they represent a risk. The ‘incorporation principle’ is Beef, defined: ‘To incorporate a food is, in both real and imaginary terms, to incorporate all or some of its properties: we become what we eat. Incorporation is a foundation for identity’.

Furthermore, on a broader level: ‘Thus, not only self, does the eater incorporate the properties of food, but, symmetrically, it can be said that the absorption of a food incorporates the eater into black death Essay a culinary system and therefore into the group which practises it, unless it irremediably excludes him. Food taboos, a favourite theme in anthropology, operate at this level: in order for a species to be defined as taboo, it must have been already implicitly classified as food. If the forbidden food were not edible, there would be no point in forbidding it’. The incorporation principle is self, another way of saying: who you are, is what you eat. When we consider the social role of food, it is in What's Eating Gilbert, important that societies do influence and teach us what we can and reflective can’t eat: ‘‘social factors may be particularly important in Problems Essay, influencing the development of preferences for foods’ (Rogers and Blundell). An example of social food taboos was documented by Mary Douglas who detailed the taboos and social factors that influence the preparation of meat in the Bible that differentiates the ‘people of the book’. “Never have we been so free. Never have we felt so powerless.” Food choices for an individual are not fixed, naturally they develop and change over self reflective time; they are informed by many different personal preferences, resources, identity needs and socio-cultural factors.

One of the prominent trends of modern western societies is the shift towards ethical consumption in the form of artisan, organic, local etc. Our food is safer and our diets are more diverse than ever before; production methods are becoming increasingly sustainable, clean and Essay on The History Economics efficient; and we are constantly becoming better at protecting biodiversity. Bisogni, et al. have suggested here that diet and self reflective essay identity are mutually constitutive. Death Essay! However, an ethical issue arises from the self essay contradiction in Essay about Beef, the continued success of self, industrialised food economies of societies to also achieve the animalia (book) individual goal of ‘ethical’ shopping. However, while many consumers’ mindsets might project into this way of thinking, this is not supported by what is selling in the marketplace. Mass produced food is reflective essay, selling very well. These are muddied waters though. When big retail chains are selling organic products, this line is becoming increasingly blurred and confused, leading some to question if there are really ‘alternative’ ways of Essay Grass-fed vs. Grain-fed Beef, eating. This has been framed with critiques of neoliberalism – which has been described as ‘capitalism with the gloves off’ . Many of the western democracies are characterised as being neoliberal. Neoliberal governments by definition have been consistently retreating from the basic needs provisioning and regulation of self reflective, some areas; correspondingly corporations and NGO’s have been filling the in What's Eating Gilbert Grape gaps. In this context, the rise of individual determinism around ethical consumer behaviour constructs roles for us as ‘citizen consumers’.

Here we have the ‘freedom’ to vote with our money; to balance the competing ideologies of self-interested consumerism with social and self reflective ecological citizenship. Facing Entrepreneurs Businesses! There is a dissonance when we are not in balance here. Johnson rightly asks ‘How did we get to the point where consumers are responsible for self essay, “saving” the world by shopping?’ Slavoj Zizek’s has framed this type of behaviour as a ‘pseudoactivity’ where our behaviour is not to ensure change but to ensure that the status quo is maintained; it’s a way of postponing the moment when we really have to think about doing something. He suggests this, like other behaviour such as recycling, are just ways of restitution for our collective crimes. “Food makes the eater: it is therefore natural that the eater should try to make himself by eating” It is relatively easy to see there is a degree of animalia (book), consensus that food is more than something that fuels and sustains us. Food is important for constructing and sustaining our identities, social boundaries and cultural differentiation.

Moving forward, the interesting thing to self keep an History and Current of Nissan eye on is our use of food as reflexive behaviour to self essay changes in society and culture. New trends and subcultures are likely to arise as we continue to 1990's grunge experiment collectively with our own individual identity recipes. If we are eating ourselves into identity, an exploration of one of the oldest food taboos is self essay, informative to end on. In distinctly gory Greek myth there is the cautionary tale of Erysichthon of Thessaly. A king of Thessaly ordered Demeter’s entire grove of trees to be cut down and in animalia (book), the process, one of her dryads (guardian spirit) was killed in the felling.

Demeter responded to self reflective the Dryads curse by entreating Limos (the Greek version of famine) to Essay plague him. The more he ate the hungrier he got. In the end he eats himself through hunger. Like many Greek myths, they appear strangely prophetic for modern society. Many of our contemporary ‘ethical’ shopping behaviours are to construct a vision of ourselves, as Erysichthon, before the grove was cut down. We are obsessed with the pre-modern past in contemporary culture. However, we still find ourselves blighted with an almost insatiable hunger. Perhaps a concern is that Zizek is right and we are the self reflective essay pseudoactivity of consuming ‘ethical’ choices, which is not a meaningful to solution to modern consumption contradictions. 1990's Grunge! We fear empty calories in a healthy diet; perhaps for our identity projects we fear empty-symbolism just as much. It is hard to construct identity on illusions.

Hollywood reflects back to us positive and negative reflections on how we perceive ourselves. Following the discussion that food is as much about the reflective consumption of meaning as nutrition, it is informative that we fine Zombies everywhere as themes in literature, movies and Film Techniques Gilbert Essay TV. Zombies are the antithesis of the self reflective entire premise of this blog – you are what you eat. As Zombies, you don’t die, you exist dehumanised; you lose your freedom, personal sovereignty, individuality, existing in alienation as a parody of the Problems Essay modern condition, indiscriminately consuming with no purpose. A thought for food. I come from Italian ethnicity where food is a social focus and usually, fresh, hearty and not too difficult to prepare. I live in America by a major city.

Most often when I walk into any grocery chain store, I smell nothing. Even ‘vine ripe’ tomatoes are wrapped in self essay, plastic. Honestly, I don’t always trust what I’m eating now and Techniques in What's Eating Gilbert I have migrated to shopping more often at an organic store. Here I’ve found a higher level of knowledge of the products they sell and yes, a belief system. I’m not as quite impassioned, but it seems to help my trust level because I’m getting information and explanation. However, there is an added cost factor that caters to a higher economic group as mentioned in your piece. I also suspect that some of the real problems we see today such as a rise in ADHD etc. has to have some environmental link (food being an aspect) if not solely a genetic factor. Sometimes, I feel pretty confused about what and what not to eat in order to reflective stay healthy. I don’t think I’m alone in this feeling.

There are a couple of things in what you say cinzia8. Because of the Essay vs. Grain-fed Beef industrialisation of food production, some fresh produce are actually frozen for up to a year – have a look at for some of the tricks they do. Tomatoes in particular loose their aroma, which is much of essay, their taste. You may know already but tomatoes grow like weeds. 1990's Grunge! I started growing my own a few years ago is a really easy way. You are right about your concerns. If you read about nutrition its enough to make anyone macroneurotic. The costs of buying organic or from farmers markets are steep.

Best options are to grow some of your own. Thanks for reading. Such a great article and blog with very good insights! Thanks #128578; Thanks for the feedback – I’m glad you found some worth reading. Very worthy and insightful article……thanks for sharing your light!! i enjoyed n learned a lot reading it word by self essay, word..line by line..thanks! #128578; Thanks for the feedback Sujata, it’s great that you found something interesting in the thinking. Interesting read, well authored. thanks for the feedback jostaz.

Very interesting and Essay on The History and Current of Nissan educative….thanks for sharing your thoughts on essay the topic. I wanted to Essay know your thoughts on how do you think globalisation is impacting food identity. Hi Swati, appreciate the feedback. Globalisation is an interesting lens to look at this topic through. There are a range of different experiences from the cultures that are driving it, to those that are being drawn into its currents. From a western perspective, food-tourism used to self reflective be a more prominent driver of experiencing the death Essay unknown ethnic ‘other’. These days the democratisation and more affordable travel, the reflective essay role of the internet in sharing cuisines, the Problems Facing Entrepreneurs and Small Essay role of blogging on the centralized de-centralisation of food knowledge in communities, increased movement of self essay, trade, patterns of global food fashions, eg. superfruits to gluten-free super-grains, etc. Film In What's Eating! are all increasing the reflective exchange of food and cuisines. As this tended to merge a bit, we’re starting to see a move away form ‘hybrid’ or fusion styles of cooking, to Essay and Current authentic and local styles.

As ‘place’ via localism, heirloom foods, etc is becoming the an important identity marker against a homogenous world. Guess the great thing is that we get a lot of yummy food. When using food to represent any culture world wide, America is perhaps something of an oddity. Many of the reflective essay foods that americans are often labeled with, pizza, donuts, hamburgers and french fries either originated in another nation or were created by foreign settlers. Even the hamburger while an american creation, is rumored from getting it’s name from people from Hamburg (a city in Gemany) naming the sandwich after themselves. Perhaps the best way to define food that helps shape America is by looking at how they are “amercanized”. When going to a fast food resteraunt like Taco Bell, anyone familier with true mexican cuisine can quickly see how burritos and tacos were given the american treatment from all the fats, sugars ad other additives we use. Dressed up to look much more appealing.

Totally agree that American represents an ‘oddity’. Considering their cultural clout with globalization, there is a great mixing pot of a transnational ‘western’ cuisine that is a hybrid of many cultures. The main drivers are the animalia (book) ability to commercially deliver novelty and agaisnt the need for reflective, food fashions. Animalia (book)! You can also include, fortune cookies, General Tso’s chicken, sushi (USA style), Italian Focaccia, Portuguese fried chicken, Indian Balti’s, etc. as examples of non-Authentic foods. The reality is that in reflective, many western cultures is that you don’t sell Italian food, you sell ‘italiancity’ which is black death, a semiotic construct not a cuisine. Reflective Essay! Similar to how Taco Bell, doesn’t reflect the real Mexico. We consume the stylised cultural experience that is being branded by big business. Thanks for commenting, appreciate your reading the article. Fabulous article.
